I recently discovered that the sunny slopes of many small islands in Voyageurs National Park are covered with blueberries and raspberries. My multi-talented friend Kerry and I spent an afternoon harvesting (and eating) these blue orbs. As I climbed along the rocky inclines and searched the forest floors I was reminded of a favorite children's book: 'Blueberries For Sal', by Robert McCloskey. Although probably better known for his 1942 Caldecott Medal winning book 'Make Way For Ducklings', I've always prefered this loving story of irrepressible curiosity and adventure....
The blueberries did make it back in my dayhatch (kayak) and made a delightful summer pie. :)
