Inukskuk Cairn
Earlier today a friend sent me information on Inukshuk Cairns. Although, I've long-been fascinated with cairns in general I'd not realized that they are often constructed representing a human figure; in this case they are referred to as an Inunnguaq Cairn. The longer arm of an inunnguaq points in the direction that you should travel. Sometimes an inukshuk has a peep hole in the middle - if you look through it, another inukshuk can be seen in
the distance.
Evidently I'm not the only one enchanted by these stone structures - Constructing inuksuit cairns in parks in Canada has become so widespread that in 2007 park officials issued a notice on the north shore of Ontario's Georgian Bay 'urging visitors to “stop the invasion” of inuksuit.'
Funny, eh?!

The South Dakota Kayak Challenge was cancelled yesterday due to high, fast water on the Missouri River. I'm disappointed....I was ready for this race; but that's how nature and life is - you don't control it, and more often than I'd like, you get thrown a curve ball. Life is 10% what happens to you, and 90% how you react to it.....and so it goes.

Thunderstorms...and thanks
I took this shot and then paddled like crazy - didn't quite make it to shore without having to deal with the 50 mph winds and rain....Thank you to the two nice gentlemen who helped me get Nemo out of the water and on my SUV. And, though they may never see this - I know many of you have helped strangers (despite having to stand in the rain yourselves!)...know, that we really appreciate your kindness!
And Nemo....I was impressed with how well this boat handles in strong winds - although I had excellent opportunity to capsize twice - I didn't. :)

Storm Coming....
Yesterday I wasn't able to stop a strong gust of wind from blowing Nemo from the roof of my car, or cracking a bone in my hand...but we both survived. Here's Nemo not looking too bad all things considered, and Cindy surveying another storm brewing.

Ain't it a glorious day? Right as a mornin' in May...I feel like I could fly.
A friendly lab wants to get into my kayak.
I've never let anyone paddle my kayak....guess that makes this girl very special!

Color!
I am often asked 'what got you interested in kayaking?'.
Well, there's the obvious - water, solitude with nature, physical challenge...but, there's also the not-so-obvious:
bright colors and sparkle!....perhaps, I should have been a parakeet...
