We saw several Portuguese Man o' War, commonly referred to as 'blue-bottles' in Australia and New Zealand, during our recent trip to the Florida Keys.
I wanted to spend more time investigating these interesting creatures, but we had 'miles to go' before we reached our next campsite, and the wind and current kept blowing them out of range or under my kayak. Although we had a few hand injuries, none of them were due to an encounter with one of these fellows.

Great sighting and photo! My "Florida's Living Beaches" book (gift from a good friend) says that beachings of these oceanic creatures are common in December through May, so I expect you saw quite a few during a February kayak trip!
